Outdoor digital signage: brightness, IP rating and heat — what to ask a factory

By the DisplaySourcing engineering teamLast updated:

Short answer: An outdoor digital signage display needs three things an indoor screen does not: at least 1,500 nits of brightness to stay readable in sunlight, a sealed cabinet rated IP55 or higher, and an active cooling system that keeps the panel within its temperature range. Everything else — glass, steel, power protection — supports those three.

1. Brightness: how many nits is enough?

Indoor signage typically runs at 300–500 nits. In direct sun, that image washes out. For outdoor and window-facing screens, specify 1,500 nits or more. Our fixed outdoor floor-standing model runs at 1,500 nits; the portable battery-powered outdoor poster runs at 1,800 nits.

Ask for automatic brightness adjustment as well. A light sensor dims the screen at night, which saves power, reduces glare for passers-by and extends panel life.

LocationTypical brightness
Indoor, away from windows300–500 nits
Shop window, semi-outdoor700–1,500 nits
Outdoor, direct sunlight1,500–2,500 nits

2. IP rating: sealing against dust and water

The IP code has two digits: the first for dust, the second for water. IP55 means protected against dust ingress that would harm operation and against water jets from any direction — the practical minimum for a screen standing in the rain. Check how the rating is achieved: door seams sealed with outdoor rubber gaskets, waterproof speakers, and cable glands at the base.

3. Cooling and heating

A high-brightness panel in a closed steel box gets hot. Good outdoor cabinets use a temperature-controlled airflow system: filtered outside air is drawn in and split into front and rear channels, fan speed follows the internal temperature, and the panel shuts down to protect itself if temperature goes out of range while the fans keep running. In cold climates, ask for a low-temperature heating module so the unit can start below freezing. Our fixed outdoor model is specified for −30 °C to +50 °C.

4. Glass and cabinet

  • Glass: 6 mm tempered glass is standard; laminated AR (anti-reflective) glass cuts reflections further.
  • Cabinet: 1.5 mm galvanized steel with outdoor-grade powder coating resists corrosion for years.
  • Anti-theft: lockable service doors and concealed fixings.

5. Power protection

Outdoor units are exposed to lightning and unstable supply. Look for an industrial-grade power supply, three-stage lightning protection, a residual-current (leakage) breaker and a scheduled on/off timer.

Frequently asked questions

What brightness is needed for outdoor digital signage?

At least 1,500 nits for direct sunlight, with automatic brightness adjustment for night-time.

What IP rating should an outdoor display have?

IP55 is the practical minimum for screens exposed to rain; it protects against harmful dust and water jets from any direction.
